    Course Description:


    Scientific Inquiry and Analysis is an interdisciplinary course designed to develop students’ independent and critical thinking skills while fostering their intrinsic curiosity to study science.  Topics studied will be chosen from a variety of chemical, physical, and mathematical science contexts, focused on getting students to think analytically about their impact on the world around them.  Through this course, students will develop skills and learn to use tools to help them achieve success in future science courses at Union County Vocational Technical Schools.

    Hands-on experiences and discovery-based learning activities will be used to introduce math and science topics within an encouraging and engaging environment.  Lessons will be designed to meet the needs of students with a variety of learning styles.  Emphasis will be placed on problem solving and cooperative group work, as these skills are essential for becoming a successful scientist.  Topics that will be covered:

    Course Goals:


    You will be able to:


    1. Investigate open-ended problems that require using science and mathematics in meaningful ways, providing them with exciting, fun, and interesting science and mathematical experiences.
    2. Develop skill in thinking critically and analytically within a real-world context.
    3. Design an experiment to analyze a question of the student’s own choosing.
    4. Demonstrate proficient use of common scientific tools, such as graphing calculators, laboratory equipment, and computers.
    5. Correctly apply the techniques of dimensional analysis, scientific notation, and unit conversion.
    6. Use an appropriate number of significant figures to correctly state results of measurements and calculations, as well as use significant figures to describe the limitations of a measurement instrument.
    7. Mathematically analyze data collected through student-conducted experiments.
    8. Make meaningful connections between science, other disciplines of study, and the world around them.
    9. Utilize technology to effectively communicate scientific information to a designated audience in written, oral, and visual formats.






     Students are responsible for all subject matter discussed in class, including materials that are missed due to absences. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what was missed during his/her absence. The best way of discovering what was missed is to ask a classmate, check the course website (Google Classroom), or consult the teacher.




    Students are expected to be ready and prepared for every scheduled class. Preparedness includes the following…


    1. On time, seated, working on the Do Now, and ready to learn at the start of class.
    2. Have your CALCULATOR, Device, Handouts, Pens, Pencils, etc. that are needed for class.
    3. Have all assignments fully completed on time (submitted online via Google Classroom)
    4. Be prepared (STUDY!!!) for tests and quizzes.


    Grading Policy:


    A grade of 65% or higher is required to pass this course.  Your grade will be calculated by a points system.  Each graded assignment, homework, test, quiz, presentation, etc. will be worth a certain number of points.  Your grade will be calculated by comparing the point value you received to the total points available for the marking period.  For example, if you earned 270 points out of a total of 300 points for the marking period, your grade will be 270/300 multiplied by 100 (270 divided by 300, times 100 = 90%).


    Class participation will be worth 40 points at the end of each marking period.  You will start each marking period with 20/40 of the participation points. You will earn one point each day if you adhere to the cell phone policy. No cell phone use during class time will earn you one point per day. Once you earn 20 points (to get you to a 40/40- 100%), every additional point becomes extra credit.  You can apply extra credit to any assignment in the Marking Period gradebook.


    All tests and quizzes will be announced in class and posted on the Google Classroom Page. Tests will be announced at least one week in advance, quizzes will be announced at least the class prior. Small pop quizzes are not announced.  The schools grading policy will be followed. Individual and group work will be clearly specified. Extra credit or bonus points will be assigned by the instructor.


    Please see me or send an email if extra help is needed. Peers are also an excellent source for help.  All work must be handed in on time to receive full credit. Because homework is almost always reviewed on the due date, late homework will not be accepted.




    You are expected to make up all assignments and obtain all class notes when you are absent (resources are available on the Google Classroom).  All assignments are due on the day you return to school unless you have e-mailed me and made arrangements to hand them in at a later time.  Absent students must make arrangements in order to take a make-up test/quiz.  If no arrangements are made, the student will be expected to take the quiz on the day he or she returns to school.




    Students are expected to be in class on time.  If you are late to class, you will miss important information (Quick Reviews) and possibly miss opportunities for class credit  (Do Now Assignments).


    Student Guidelines:


    Below are listed expectations that apply to all students at all times in the classroom. These expectations are reviewed the first week in class and enforced the entire year. These expectations are set in place to ensure a safe and productive learning environment for all students.


    • If you wish to speak, please raise your hand and wait to be called on.
    • Respect your fellow students at all times.
    • Cell phone use in class is prohibited and usage will affect your participation grade.
